D.I.Y Giant Pom Pom In 60 Seconds Flat

How to Make A Giant Pom Pom In 60 Seconds Flat

The pom pom is definitely the mascot for knitting and we invented a way to make a giant pom in one minute. I’m so thrilled about this easy technique that I had to share. Follow the step by step instructions and you’ll be shocked at how easy it is.

Jump over to Handmade Charlotte for the full tutorial.

Thanks Red Heart!

Today, I'm sharing these quick and easy DIY Cake Stands. I snagged some outdoor dinnerware at Target last week, and I was admiring the cups when it occurred to me that they would make a great foot for a cake stand. So I flipped them over, popped a plate on top and made the easiest and most inexpensive cake stand ever.

You can also find tutorials on HERE, that's my favorite place to hang out and I'd love to see you there!

D.I.Y Dip Dye Cupcake Liners

Dip Dye Cupcake Liners

* White cupcake liners
* Food coloring
* Water
* Bowls for mixing the dye in that are wide enough on the bottom to fit the top of a cupcake liner
* Newspaper or an old sheet to protect the surface you’re working on (it can get messy)

It’s pretty simple actually, all you have to do is mix the food coloring in a bowl with some water (use more water for lighter shades) and then dip the top of the cupcake liner in it. I tried dying the bottom of the liner and it didn't work so well, but perhaps you’re more talented than me and can pull it off. Also, as I mentioned the cupcake liners don’t soak up the dye very quickly, and since I’m rather impatient I ended up just swishing them around in the dye so the process would go much faster. Swishing them around means that the color at the top won’t be even, but I kind of like it that way.

After you've put the liners in the dye mixture, there will be some excess on them (as you can see above). You can either just wait it out and it will dry eventually, making the color a bit darker… or you can gently tap the liners on the edge of the bowl to shake off the excess dye. Just make sure you have something underneath, because as you can see below, it can get a bit messy.

The colors I chose to do were pink, purple and sea foam. Mixing up all the colors brought me back to elementary school – it was fun!

Pink was just red dye and water; Purple was a mixture of blue and red (though I think I might have accidentally used more blue than red); Sea foam was a mixture of blue and green (think it was pretty equal that time).

Marijuana to Help Sleep

Can medical marijuana help insomnia?

* There are studies out there to support the claim that those who use marijuana in the evenings tend to report a good night’s sleep. And, there is little doubt that poor sleep patterns can have a negative effect on your life as a whole; not only does it lead to poor health and many minor ailments (which when experienced all at the same time can have the same effect as a major medical condition), but it also leads to poor productivity and time lost from work.

* In worst case scenarios, of course, lack of sleep can be fatal, in that poor concentration when driving or operating machinery leads to operator mistakes. Though I am not advocating the use of marijuana as a first line of defense to help aid in sleepless nights, there are certain elements of marijuana that have shown to have medical significance in helping those suffering from insomnia and healthy REM sleep cycles.

* A recent study, undertaken at Alberta University in Canada, was designed to investigate the effects of THC on appetite, specifically on the appetite of cancer patients. An unexpected finding of the study, however, was that the patients receiving THC also slept better than the control group. In fact, the study was published with the headline: “Pot Helps Cancer Patients Sleep and Enjoy Food.” The first thing to remember when looking for a marijuana strain to help one sleep is that sativa-based strains tend to give you a high — the last thing you want when you have sleep problems. Indica-based strains, on the other hand, are great for relaxation, stress relief, and for an overall sense of calm and serenity.

* The two basic cannabis strains are Indica and Sativa. The majority of medical cannabis today is a hybrid that contains characteristics of both Indica and Sativa strains with one or the other being dominant. An Indica-dominant hybrid could be used for pain relief and have a Sativa strain that can help with a person’s energy level, whereas a Sativa-dominant hybrid could be used to stimulate a person’s appetite and have an Indica strain that can help with pain relief. Since relaxation, getting to sleep, and easing other sleep disorders is a priority, for aid in sleeping, one would want an Indica-dominant hybrid.

* The two medical components of cannabis for sleep to be assessed are Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). In the most basic terms, THC is the high and CBD in the medical component that relieves nausea, inflammation, and anxiety. An Indica dominant hybrid will be lower in THC but higher in CBD. The effects are a couch-locking, body buzz that is a heavier, sleepy high.

* The addictive properties of marijuana make using pot to help ones sleep a slippery slope. Many of us recovering addicts will advocate that getting a good night’s sleep is a crucial part of our ability to maintain our sobriety. Sleep gives us energy to deal with the everyday nuances of life and, without getting a night’s rest, we are often more irritable, bothersome, and more likely to prevent ourselves from doing important things like going to meetings or taking an active participatory role in our sobriety. Do not underestimate the importance of your sleep cycle and discuss your sleeping problems and available options with your psychiatrist if they continue to persist and interfere with your daily life.

Paris Fashion Week

     Models walked the runway at Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2013 show in Paris wearing satin bow headbands.

     While this particular accessory is usually associated with young girls, I love the youthful charm it adds to the Tippi Hedren-esque hairstyle.

D.I.Y Ribbon and Pearl Necklace

LANVIN - Pearl Necklace

* Ribbon
* Pearl beads
* Needle & Thread

Cut your ribbon to desired length, adding enough length to flow in and out between the pearls.

Pierce the ribbon in the middle of its width along your piece of ribbon. Thread on a pearl.

Bend the ribbon around the pearl to judge where you should put the needle next.

You want the ribbon to wrap tautly around the pearl without gasping, but not so little the pearl bulge out.

Depending on your pearl size,Getting this right takes a little bit of practice, but you'll get it quickly.

Put on the next pearl.

Continue to alternate between threading a pearl and wrapping the ribbon until you reach your desired length.

When you are ready to end the necklace, bring the floss back through the bent ribbon and through a couple of pearls.

Secure the floss off hidden underneath a pearl as much as possible.

Go to the beginning of the necklace and pull the tail end of your original knot through some of the pearls and secure.

DIY: Pearl Hair Pins

Inspiration from Chanel's SP 2012 collection

* Pearls Beads
* Wire
* Bobby pins
* Wire cutter
* Flat nose pliers

Step 1 : Cutting off a short piece of the wire. About 4 inches or so.

Step 2 : To get the wire attached to the pin, I slightly curled the end and then began wrapping it around the top bar of the bobby pin. I wrapped it around twice to make sure the wire was secure.

Step 3 : After the wire is secured I added a bead onto the wire and then adjusted it to allow the bead to set directly on top of the pin.

Step 4 : Once the bead was situated how I wanted it, I wrapped the wire around the bobby pin two more times. After it was tightly wrapped I snipped the excess wire off and pinched it close along the pin to make sure it wouldn't catch in my hair.

Step 1 : You will be cutting out 2 long strips so I folded it in half to make it easier to cut.

Step 2 : Measure your head and decide how long you want your piece to be and mark it on your fabric.

Step 3 : Cut it out.

Step 4 : Use a ruler and mark the corner where you want to angle and cut it off.

Step 5 : Cut off the corners.

Step 6 : Sew the “right sides” together.

Step 7 : Sew all the way until you approach 2 inches before the end of the last corner.

Step 8 : Leave that opening to pull your fabric through it.

Step 9 : Pull the fabric through to turn it right side out.

Step 10 : Cut out wire and round the ends so it doesn't cut through the fabric.

Step 11 : Once you have it pulled through- hand stitch it shut and sew a few stitches around the wire loop to keep it nice secure.

D.I.Y Fabric Flower No. 15

Inspiration from Forever 21

* Fabric
* Scissors
* Thread & Needle

Step 1 : Cut a 12" by 1" strip of fabric.You can also try longer lengths and/or widths for a larger flower.

Step 2 : Cut thin slits on one side of the strip, from end to end width wise. Be careful not to cut to the opposite side.

Step 3 : Roll up the entire strip,It sticks together pretty well because of the fibers.No worries of it unraveling during this process.

Step 4 : Sew the rolled layers together.Start from the outside and thread to the center. Sew from center to the outside and through center again and Repeat.

Step 5 : Continue stitching over and through the center, then back out and repeat.

Step 6 : Make sure to stitch all the way around. Give the thread a pull to tighten the layers.Tie ends off.

D.I.Y Fabric Flower No.14

* Fabric
* Needle and Thread
* Button

Step 1: Cut a strip down the entire length of your fabric (on the longest end).

Step 2: With a threaded needle, sew a running stitch down the entire length of the felt strip.

Step 3: Gently pull the tails of thread so your felt begins to ruffle and form a tight circle.

Step 4: Tie your two pieces of thread (the tail from the front and the back) into a knot to hold the flower shape in place.

Step 5: Sew (or use hot glue) a button on for the center.

D.I.Y Fabric Flower No.13

* Fabric
* Needle & Thread
* Beads
* Scissors

Step 1 : I use a spool as my guide. I trace on the wrong side of the fabric.

Step 2 : Follow the line as a guide.

Step 3 : Cut the circles out leaving about 1/8" - 1/4" allowance.

Step 4 : Cut a slit on the back so you can turn the fabric. If I were making a big flower, like as a pincushion, I would have left an opening when sewing. This will give you a consistent edge.

Step 5 : Stuff tight.

Step 6 : Sew shut. You might want to use matching thread.

Step 7 : Use 2 strands of embroidery thread, double over and knot. Push through so needle comes out the front side. Loop around to front again. Pull tight. This will make a line.

Step 8 : Continue and space equally. I usually make 5 to look like a star.

Step 9 : Add beads to the middle.

D.I.Y Easy Collar

* Old Shirt
* Needle & Thread
* Button
* Scissors

Step 1 :
Starting on one side of the shirt, begin to carefully cut the collar off, being very careful to cut just below the area where the collar is sewed on. This will keep the collar in tact, meaning you will have very little sewing to do.

Step 2 : Once the collar is completely cut off from the shirt, trim any edges or lose threads that might still be left.

Step 3 : Thread your needle with about 6-12 inches of thread, and secure the ends with a knot. Poke the needle through the collar from the back, about half an inch above the buttonhole that’s already there.

Step 4 : Thread the button or broach through the needle.

Step 5 : Once the button is on the thread, poke the needle back through the collar slightly below the area where it first came up. This will help stabilize the button.

Step 6 : Repeat steps 3-5 several more times to ensure that the button is on securely. On the back of the collar, tie the two ends of the thread together in a knot, and trim any excess that reminds.

Step 7 : Try your collar on. You should be able to fasten it using the button and buttonhole that was already on the collar. The decorative button you sewed on should be in the middle of collar.

* Lace
* Jeans
* Scissors
* Sewing Machine or Needle and Thread
* Pins

Step 1 : You have to decide on the length of the shorts.Put the jeans on or use another pair of shorts to lay on top of your jeans. Once you have decided on the length, cut the jeans. When the first leg is cut of you can lay the short one on the long one as a guidance for the cutting.

Step 2 : You need to pin your lace on the shorts. I have cut of the lace a little longer then I really needed, you can cut off the extra later. My lace joins between the legs, because that’s the least visible spot.

Step 3 : Sew the lace with a zig-zag stitch on the shorts. The zig-zag stitch on the bottom of the lace will also prevent the denim from fraying. I also did a zig-zag on the top of the lace. I used a regular stitch to close the ends of the lace and secure it on the shorts.

Ruffled Fabric Flower

* Strip of fabric
* Needle & Thread

* Hot glue gun

Step 1 : Cut a piece of strip fabric.

Step 2 : Fold strip in half length, right-side out. Press flat.

Step 3 : Stitch long, spaced out stitches along the cut edges of the strip.

Step 4 : Holding one piece of thread on one end of the fabric, gather the fabric as shown below.

Step 5 : This part can be a little tricky. Spiral your fabric around and around, starting at one end and sort of stacking it on itself.

Step 6 : Sew a button in the center by hand, making sure to catch a good portion of your fabric each time. This will help the flower stay together.

D.I.Y Fabric Flower No.11

Semi Kanzashi Style

* Fabric

and repeat for the other edge.

Step 3 :
Turn it over ; fold the outer edge (with all the edges)

Step 6 :
This method involves cutting, I do it now while the material is on the needle — you can see where I'm cutting.

Step 7 :
Repeat 4 times ; sew through the first petal again, and tie to create the flower in the round. A little tighter this time around.

Step 8 :

Fluff out the petals by placing your finger into the petals like so.
